Defintitoion of 'new literacies':
From reading:
Knobel, M., & Lankshear, C. (2006). Discussing New Literacies. Language Arts, 84(1), 78,
We see them defining new literacies as a combination a new mind set and new technologies.
Two things that are striking about this definition are that firstly it implies totaly new ways of thinking and being in the world. Secondly that the digitalisation that they mention is implyed to be somiting totally new and somthing that has created new systems and cultures that are somehow seperate and new.
This new way of understanding cyberspace and its implications is needs a deep consideration of and appreciation of the impact that it has had. It is possible to see that it could have a big an impact as printed book technologies on the mind set of the world though that is hard to see there definitions involves the new ethos moving more and more away from the old mindset, this seems a litttle simplistic in some ways, and not taking ito acount the reality of the vast majority of the worlds poverty etc.
This is a complex definition and good in the way it requires a deeper reading of the effects that the new technologies and new mind sets are having in the world around us. This has implications for the way we teach and what we teach.
Possibly we need to consider postmodernism and deconstruction in this type of definition and rereading of the role of these technologies have on our world if we are looking for such a radical understanding of the role of new literacies.
